Steve’s 5K

Back in February I decided to start running.  I found a program online that was a guide to going from a couch potato to running a 5K in 8 weeks.  So, I tried to follow it as best I could.  Eventually, I lost interest.  But when the weather got nice I took to the open road and decided to see how far I could run…

Turns out, not that far.

However, after running fairly consistently, I got myself up to 3 miles (a 5K is 3.1M).  As luck would have it, there was a 5K being run right near my house.  How great was that?  So, I signed up and ran.  I did the 5K in 38 min.  Not bad for a first timer.  I finished 74th out of about 150.  Below are some gross photos of the finish line.

The First Official Shaw Family Vacation

The Shaw Family took their first official vacation this past weekend.  On a whim we decided to head down to DC for the last weekend of the Cherry Blossom Festival.  We jumped in the car on Friday night after work and made the 4.5 hour journey.  It wasn’t bad.  Jack fell asleep about 7:20 and slept almost the whole way.  He woke up a few times crying, but only for 30 seconds, and then went back to sleep.  He did, however, wake up when we got to DC… and was awake.

The hotel we stayed at was WAY to nice for a family vacation, as evidence to the fact that the entire lobby was a chic lounge with people in expensive clothes drinking expensive drinks with very loud slow techno playing.  The bell hop was yelling, “Baby coming through,” as Jen and carried Jack in a blanket through this club.

We got to our very fancy room and got our very small rental crib.  That was a no go.  So, Jack slept with us and spent most of the night kicking me in the ribs and pushing me off a king sized bed.  The next day was fun.  We walked around and saw the parade and a lot of the monuments.

Jack’s 2 favorite things were the WWII Memorial with the fountains and the DC Metro Police on the horses.  At one point Jack was yelling, “Horsey ride!  Horsey Ride!”  I’m just glad he didn’t tell the cop, “Jack’s turn!”  Getting back to the hotel was not so good as Jack was tired and wanted to stay by the fountains.  But he slept better that night, which was nice.

All in all it was a great trip and we can’t wait to do it again!

Fa la la la la la la la laaaaaaaaaaa

Jack had a GREAT Christmas this year.  He’s still too young for Santa (and he SURE didn’t like him too much), but he got the concept of presents.  Of course, the first gift he opened at Nana and Poppa’s house was a toy vacuum cleaner.  And we all know that Jack’s favorite thing to do is clean.  So, he proceeded to ignore the rest of his gifts and vacuum the whole place!

Christmas at Grammy’s house was fun.  He got some nice toys and played with Aunt Jessica’s dog, Maggie.  He was a little hesitant at first, but was feeding Magie goldfish by the end of the night.

Unfortunately Jack got sick and couldn’t make it to Grandpa and Grandma T’s.  But he did get some very nice gifts which he opened at home and we sent pictures to them so they could see.

Turkey Day

Jack had a great Thanksgiving at Grandpa and Grandma T’s.  He even had some little friends to play with.  He was laughing and running around.  It was a lot of fun.

Of course, he still won’t eat any Thanksgiving food except corn… which he ate about 4 ears worth.

Maybe we’ll be eating turkey and stuffing by next year.

Trick or Treat!

Isn’t Jack the cutest Elmo you have ever seen?

He totally got into the trick or treating.  He tried to walk into every person’s apartment who opened the door.  We all had a great time.  Jack even helped to hand out candy to the kids who came to out house.  Although, he was giving out candy one piece at a time.

Fall at The Bronx Botanical Gardens

Last weekend there was a Fall Festival at The Botanical Gardens.  We decided to take advantage of the nice weather and head down with Jack… after all, The Gardens are only minutes from our place and I can count on one hand the amount of times we’ve gone.

Jack had a good time.  There were a lot of kids there, so he had fun watching everyone.  He also tried to make some friends with some older kids, but they were not interested.  Not to be deterred, Jack just kept playing with them anyway and trying to emulate them.  He really thinks he’s older than he is.

Pumpkin Patch

The Shaw clan went to VT this past weekend and took Jack to his first Pumpkin Patch.  I don’t know if he was took thrilled about posing for the pictures, but he did like walking around and looking at everything.  Especially when a truck pulled over on the side of the road… now THAT was excitement!

Jack even had a little piece of Apple Cider Doughnut!  He didn’t spit it out… but he didn’t have another piece either.

Anyway, we had a great time and got some good shots.

VT Bound

I’m sitting in the back of the car with Jack on the way to VT. So far this trip has been 100 times more pleasant than Labor Day Weekend. Not sue if its because he took an hour nap at the start or if he’s just getting used to being in the car.

I may have spoke to soon. He’s starting to get antsy as I type this.

Sesame Street Mad Men Parody

I have always been a huge fan of anything Jim Henson.  All my life.  I grew up with Sesame Street, Muppets, Fraggles, Dark Crystal, etc.  Now, as a 30 year old man, I can get away with still liking Muppets.  Its socially acceptable… or at least I don’t get too many strange looks.  But Sesame Street kind of fell to the wayside.

Now that I am a Dad, I have started watching again.  It is a really funny show.  Sure, its geared towards a younger audience, but there is a lot of humor for parents too.  I realize I am stating the obvious here, as the whole draw of Sesame Street was to entertain kids and parents, but it is still true.  There are times when I find myself watching when Jack has gone off to pull all his clothes out of the draw.

As further proof of this, in the new season they are doing a Mad Men parody.  I found a clip of it below…

The link somehow vanished… I’m sure you can find it on YouTube.

Jack: The Working Man

Why can’t Jack ever cooperate for a picture?  Seconds before I took the picture he had his laptop open and his phone to his ear.  By the time I grabbed the camera he closed the laptop, and put the phone down.  Anyway, its still a cute picture, even if the one I wanted to take he really did look like “The Working Man.”
